Create a Composite

Updated on 2010-10-22

Select Tools then "Composites" to open the composites form.

The Items grid displays the composites you have created.
The "Info" column displays information regarding the calculation progress of a composite.

- To create a new composite, click on Add.
In the first step, you will need to select the symbols that will be used in the composite calculation.
You can select whether to include other composites in the calculation of the current one by checking Include composite symbols checkbox.
By default, composites are not included.

- Click on Next to continue. The next screen is the most important one.

- Type the formula you want to use to calculate the composite then select the calculation method.
As an example, to create a composite that calculates the number of stocks that are above their 20-Bar moving average:
- Type the following formula: close > sma(20)
- Select the following calculation method: the sum of the values added to the composite.
For any given date, the composite will calculate (close > sma(20)) for each instrument and then sums the results.

The Multiply the composite by input tells the composite to multiply its values by the specified number.

The Script button allows you to create advanced composites using the .Net programming language.

- Click on next to move to the next screen.

The above Trackbar specifies the percentage of data points that should be found on a given date in order to calculate the composite.
Example: The composite is based on 100 symbols, however on a particular date quotes are available only for 10 symbols (10%). If you specify a "Trackbar" value that is higher or equal than 10% then the composite will not be calculated for that date.

The start and end date allow you to specify when the composite should start and end.
Click on Use all available period to select all dates and on Use end date to automatically select an end date. In this case, the composite will always use the last available date.

In the Timeframe control, select the composite time-frame.

- Click on next to move to the last screen.

- Type the name, full name and description then click on Next to complete the composite creation process.

After creating a composite

When the composite calculation is completed, double click on the composite to display its chart.

Composites are calculated just after their creation and also automatically when new historical or intraday quotes are detected.
You can select to not automatically update a composite, by selecting the "Settings" tab then unchecking the Automatically update composites....
