Create & Delete a Custom Database

Updated on 2010-10-22

To create a new custom database:
- Select Data on the main menu, and then click on Edit Databases.
- Select "Manage Databases" tab.
- In "Create a new custom database" group-box, type the database name and database type (Historical or Intraday).
- Click on Add a new database.

The difference between the Historical and Intraday database is that in the intraday database the data column (which is automatically created) can contain hours, minutes and seconds info, while in the Historical database, the date contains only the day, month and year info.
Example: A news database should be an intraday database because there are several news items for a security on a given date.

To add a descriptive name to your database, select a database in the "Database descriptive name" group-box, type a descriptive name then click on Save.

Why you will need a descriptive name:
Because when using the "Symbols Selection" control to select symbols, you can filter symbols using database values.
In the filter list-box you will easily recognize your database if you provide it with a descriptive name.

We will see later how we can access custom databases data using QuantShare language and how we can use this data to create trading indicators, composites and trading rules.

Trading financial instruments, including foreign exchange on margin, carries a high level of risk and is not suitable for all investors. The high degree of leverage can work against you as well as for you. Before deciding to invest in financial instruments or foreign exchange you should carefully consider your investment objectives, level of experience, and risk appetite. The possibility exists that you could sustain a loss of some or all of your initial investment and therefore you should not invest money that you cannot afford to lose. You should be aware of all the risks associated with trading and seek advice from an independent financial advisor if you have any doubts.
