Add an Indicator

Updated on 2010-10-22

A trading indicator is a mathematical calculation that generates a time-series/metric whose value is derived from the asset price, fundamental data or any other data.

You can add one or several indicators in a chart or pane.

In each pane, there are three icons located in top-left corner. Click on the first one to add a new indicator. A new form should appear.

Indicator/Function form
The Add Indicator/Function form contains several tabs:

Overlays
This tab appears only when you want to add an indicator to the first pane of a chart. It contains popular technical analysis indicators that should be plotted on the pane where candlestick bars are drawn.

Popular Indicators
This tab does not appear when you add an indicator to the first pane of a chart. It contains popular and commonly used technical indicators.

All Indicators
This is the second tab and it is always visible. It contains a list of all available trading indicators in QuantShare (+300). Select a category to search for specific indicators or type a keyword in the search input box to find all indicators whose name or full name contains the keyword you have typed.

On the left pane, the function name, description and parameters are displayed.

- You can update a function parameter values by double clicking on any cell under the "Value" column.
- Next to the "Value" column, click on the icon to display the parameter type.
- Next to it, another icon helps you set the parameter value when you click on it.

Under the parameters control, there is a checkbox named "Numeric".
When this field is checked, only numeric indicators are displayed (Numeric indicators are functions that return a numeric value), otherwise only string/text functions are displayed.

Databases/Fields
This tab allows you to create an indicator that displays values of a database's field. You should first create and populate a database in order to use this function (More info later)

Advanced Rules
This tab allows you to create advanced rules (More info later)

Trading financial instruments, including foreign exchange on margin, carries a high level of risk and is not suitable for all investors. The high degree of leverage can work against you as well as for you. Before deciding to invest in financial instruments or foreign exchange you should carefully consider your investment objectives, level of experience, and risk appetite. The possibility exists that you could sustain a loss of some or all of your initial investment and therefore you should not invest money that you cannot afford to lose. You should be aware of all the risks associated with trading and seek advice from an independent financial advisor if you have any doubts.
