Basic Charting Options (Bars, Zoom, Shortcuts)

Updated on 2010-10-22

On any chart, you can display ten, hundreds or even thousands of trading bars. On a daily timeframe, each bar corresponds to a specific date.

Below the chart, there is a scroll-bar that allows you to select how many bars to display on a chart. This Scroll-bar is also used to select the quotes to display in case there are more bars than what is displayed.

- To move the scroll-bar, simply keep clicking on it and then move your mouse.
- To display more or less bars on a chart, select the left or right borders of the scrollbar. You will notice that the mouse cursor changes. Keep clicking on one border then move your mouse left or right to increase/decrease the number of displayed bars.

Shortcuts / Zoom / Time-frame
- Next to the scroll-bar, there is an icon that when you click on it will display a form that contains some shortcuts information.

- Next to this icon, there are two additional icons. Click on the first one to zoom in a chart and on the second one to zoom out a chart. Zooming in will decrease the number of bars displayed, while zooming out will increase the number of bars displayed.

- Next to these icons, there is a list menu that allows you to select the chart timeframe.
As we already said, in a daily timeframe each bar you see on a chart corresponds to a specific day. On a weekly timeframe, each bar corresponds to a week and on a monthly timeframe, each bar corresponds to a month.

Using intraday timeframes, an hourly timeframe displays bars where each bar corresponds to a specific hour of a particular day.

Click on the time-frame control to display a small menu. Click on one time-frame to automatically update the chart time-frame.

You can also select or specify a custom historical or intraday time frame. Example, select "Custom" and on the new form type "2" then click on "OK". This will create a chart with a time frame of 2 days.

Trading financial instruments, including foreign exchange on margin, carries a high level of risk and is not suitable for all investors. The high degree of leverage can work against you as well as for you. Before deciding to invest in financial instruments or foreign exchange you should carefully consider your investment objectives, level of experience, and risk appetite. The possibility exists that you could sustain a loss of some or all of your initial investment and therefore you should not invest money that you cannot afford to lose. You should be aware of all the risks associated with trading and seek advice from an independent financial advisor if you have any doubts.
