The Russell 2000 Index is a popular U.S. small-cap index. It tracks and measures the performance of 2000 small-capitalized companies. The index is calculated using the market value-weighted methodology and it is published by the Russell Company.
The Russell 2000 Index is a subset of the Russell 3000 Index, which is made up of the 3000 largest U.S. stocks. The less capitalized companies among these 3000 constitute the Russell 2000 Index. It represents about 10% of the market capitalization of the Russell 3000 Index.
The Russell 2000 Index is also commonly used as a benchmark for small-cap mutual funds.
