A REIT is a company that invests in real estate and distributes at least 90% of its income to its investors/shareholders. REITs are involved into financing real estate or income-producing real estate such as shopping centers, offices, hotels and apartments. As with other companies, REITs are listed on stock exchanges if they are publicly held, otherwise they are privately held.

The FTSE NAIREIT US Real Estate Index Series is a suite of REIT performance indices for the US market. These indices include the ALL REITs index, Composite REITs index, Real Estate 50 Index, Equity REITs Index, Mortgage REITs Index and Hybrid REITs Index.

REITs are usually classified into three categories: Equity, Mortgage and Hybrid. Each one of these categories is represented by one of the last three indices. The FTSE NAREIT Composite index includes all REITs that belong to equity, mortgage or hybrid category.
The All REITs Index includes all available REITs while the Real Estate 50 Index consists of the largest 50 REITs, by market capitalization, from the NAREIT Composite Index.

Trading financial instruments, including foreign exchange on margin, carries a high level of risk and is not suitable for all investors. The high degree of leverage can work against you as well as for you. Before deciding to invest in financial instruments or foreign exchange you should carefully consider your investment objectives, level of experience, and risk appetite. The possibility exists that you could sustain a loss of some or all of your initial investment and therefore you should not invest money that you cannot afford to lose. You should be aware of all the risks associated with trading and seek advice from an independent financial advisor if you have any doubts.
